Statement from Economic Security California on the California Budget Proposal
01. 09. 2026
Regardless of the fiscal forecast, ESCA calls on Gov. Newsom and lawmakers to propose a budget that keeps California bold.
Sacramento, CA – Governor Newsom released the 2026-27 Proposed Budget on Friday, January 9, following his final State of the State address yesterday. Teri Olle, Director of Economic Security California, issued the following statement in response:
California is facing a mixed financial outlook, but Californians are not. Families are grappling with unprecedented household budget pressures due to rising costs for housing, healthcare, groceries, and utilities. While our state leaders are working hard to meet the needs of Californians, the reality is that traditional approaches alone won’t be enough to address the scale of challenges we’re confronting.
This is a moment that demands bold thinking and a willingness to consider new solutions. Last year, California demonstrated real leadership to address the affordability crisis when the legislature passed and Governor Newsom signed AB 325 to crack down on algorithmic price fixing and SB 53 to democratize access to AI infrastructure. These weren’t easy fights, but they showed what’s possible when we’re willing to take on powerful interests and put people first.
Now we need to bring that same courage to the broader question of how we generate the stable revenue necessary to invest in healthcare, education, and the fundamental building blocks of economic security. The people of California deserve an economy that works for everyone, and where everyone pays their fair share. That requires leaders to make tough decisions, to resist the power and influence of corporate monopolies, and pursue new approaches that ensure our communities have the resources they need to thrive.
