Vision

With an expanded Child Tax Credit, a mom can now afford diapers and formula and return to her job as a medical assistant. She can cover rent, set aside savings, and plan for her daughter’s future with a more stable income. A local business owner, freed from competing against large corporate chains benefitting from historically low tax rates, finds his business on stronger footing, allowing him to hire two more employees, offer health benefits, and give back to his community. And American consumers benefit from a tax system that fosters fair competition, leading to lower prices and more choices in essential areas like groceries, prescription drugs, healthcare, and housing.

Our goal is to shape a fair tax system that levels the playing field for all people and families, promotes competition, and prioritizes the well-being of workers, small businesses, and communities. By making smart investments in tax policy, we can build a multiracial economy where all Americans have stability and pathways to prosperity and opportunity. Reforming the tax code can shift power from the hands of the few to the many, and unlock economic potential across communities, lowering barriers to upward mobility for families, ensuring small businesses have the support to compete fairly, and empowering workers to thrive. We’re committed to a tax system that makes the economy work for all—not just for the wealthiest and most dominant corporations.

Challenge

$4.6T

The cost of extending TCJA cuts over the next decade.

15¢

The TCJA returned just 15 cents for every dollar it cost taxpayers.

The vast income inequality and affordability crisis Americans face today stems from decades of tax policies that favor the ultrawealthy and powerful corporations. These policies have rewarded the wealthy with historically low tax rates, widening economic divides and leaving middle- and low-income Americans with fewer resources. This inequality has compounded structural racism, as unchecked corporate practices allow companies to disinvest from and exploit Black and Brown communities. Corporations with excessive market dominance often depress wages, create precarious work conditions, and limit economic opportunity in these communities. The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) exacerbated this trend, handing massive tax breaks to billionaires and corporations while everyday families shouldered the cost. Now, in 2025, we can change course and create a tax code that prioritizes fairness, competition, and economic freedom for all.

The stakes are high: the Child Tax Credit is set to drop from $2,000 to $1,000 per child, losing eligibility for many families, including immigrant children. These changes could increase child poverty, reversing the progress achieved through prior expansions. At the same time, tax cuts for the wealthiest individuals and large corporations would remain locked in, costing the public nearly $4.6 trillion over ten years. Meanwhile, the current tax code fuels market consolidation, allowing a handful of large corporations to grow richer at the expense of small grocers, neighborhood childcare centers, and new startups. Without intervention, this trend tips the scales against consumers, leading to higher prices, increased junk fees, and fewer choices. The question is whether we can shape a tax code that values working families, curbs concentrated corporate power, and prioritizes shared prosperity—or if we’ll continue down a path that worsens inequality, favors the wealthy, and undermines economic stability for millions.

What We Do

We are driving a national movement to secure tax fairness for working families and create a more equitable economy. As a leader in public advocacy for the Child Tax Credit (CTC) and Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), we partner with allies nationwide to ensure these credits remain accessible, impactful, and inclusive. Our coalition-building efforts connect a broad range of voices—from racial justice advocates to conservative groups committed to child well-being—to strengthen support for expanding these vital tax credits and demonstrating their benefits to policymakers.

In the upcoming tax reform debate, we’re pushing to rebalance the tax code by raising taxes on corporations and the wealthiest individuals, which could take the form of higher rates for large companies and ending tax incentives for mergers that stifle competition. We’re also fighting for IRS modernization and the expansion of Direct File to create a free, accessible way for Americans to file taxes and claim benefits without costly barriers. By amplifying the stories of families, small business owners, and workers affected by tax policy, we’re building momentum for transformative change to rebalance economic power and support shared prosperity in 2025 and beyond.
